2011 is just three days away. As we enter a new decade , here are top challenges in front of India. Challenges which if dealt in way it should be would pave way for Indian Rise in coming 25 years. Challenges which are important for every Indian because directly or indirectly it effects each and every life , whether we know it or not , whether we care for it or not , whether we like it or not, whether we want it or not.
1) Corruption : This is number uno problem for India. The biggest challenge is how to clean the system. Corruption is not new problem for India. Soon after independence mahatma gandhi included corruption issue in his speech and he looked frustrated about it. With years corruption grew from lakhs to few crores to hundreds of crores to now what we see scams worth 1 lakh + crore. Corruption effects lives of each and every Indian. When one can get fake ration card bribing some , security of Indian becomes a concern. When fake degree earns job , it effects life of those whom these faker serves. When government schemes end up being in paper only , citizens of India get disillusioned and its after effects are many , from suicide to migration to being part of naxals.
2010 was shocker for Indians . We have had various scams and big four namely up food scam , 2g scam, adarsh scam , cwg scam showed how every institute tie up in getting the money . If we want India to seriously grow and reach its potential , we need to clean the system. How is challenge because system is too powerful. In coming decade will of government and its ability to deal with corruption would decide fate of India for coming 25 years.
2) Climate Change :
We dont see rain on month of nov in ahmedabad or saurashtra. We dont see such seasonal change when winter dips to lowest temperatures and next day sun shines with full glare. We dont always see coldest day in 20 years at one place while hottest summer day in 20 years at another place.
India is still largely an agriculture based country . The only water source majority depend on is rain. We need to make sure that in coming decade we meet the challenge of climate change.
3) Terrorism :
We unfortunately live in troubled neighborhood. We have out neighbor as Pakistan who is fighting decisive battle with taliban. 2010 has been continuation of bomb blasts in Pakistan and things dont look to change in coming couple of years. Lashkar is going strong and some elements of ISI still support them inspite of strong opposition from civil society of Pakistan. Lashkar is big threat for India and would continue to be so.
In home grown we have three challenges. One being Islamic terrorist like simi and IM. They can easily get support from across the border and have shown their potential for cowardly strikes like latest blast in Varanasi. Their network is big challenge and in coming years , the threat of SIMI and Im would be inversely proportional to Indian government’s ability to empower muslim community.
Another threat is rise in extremist mindset in hindu groups like abhinav bharat. They have similar mindset as that of SIMI. Those who believe hindus cannot be terrorist must view hindus and muslims as human beings and not from prisms of religion. At core all humans are same and brain if convinced for violence is most dangerous weapon in the world. It doesnot matter whether that brain has hindu upbringing or muslim one. It is true that hindus dont have single book and hindus believes in multiple path leading to same god but extreme mindset of any is dangerous and not good in long run for India.
Biggest of them all are naxals. They have goal of taking over India and establishing communist government in center. They are armed , trained and have passion for their purpose. They are ruthless . This challenge is linked with corruption and lack of inclusive growth along with caste issue and other factors.
4) Demographic Dividend :
India is in its most crucial era. Soon India would have more people in earning group than non earning age group. The ability to direct the youth , give them employment , sense of belonging , purpose would be vital for growth of India and failing to do that would effect India dearly. History states that a country grows most during demographic dividend phase and if government fails to direct youth during that phase , it brings country down like never before. It is big big challenge for government and great opportunity to take India forward.
5) City/Infrastructure :
We need hundred of cities in numbers to cope up . Present big cities are getting saturated. We need to plan new cities with necessary infrastructure to cater the needs of rising India.
6) Inclusive Growth :
Since globalization India has grown tremendously. With consistent growth India has become 1 trillion + economy . That is one part of story while another part being that India has 40% poverty as per official stats and more than 70 as per other sources. If we dont have inclusive growth , we dont need scientist from ISRO to decode expected future.
If we would have 50 billionare in top 100 global billionare list in future would it matter much as long as we have 40% poors in the world. Inclusive growth is challenge and key for prosperous India.
7) Health :
Now with rising India , we have two types of health issues. One is life style oriented while another is general. India is diabetes capital of the world . India is also rising in heart cases. It is big and huge challenge for government to deal with.
The above are few of top challenges which India faces in coming decade. How we deal with it would impact lives of billions. As we gear up for the coming decades , challenges are many . Successful dealing with them would make India stronger and prosperous. Are we ready?
