Another honor killing has occured. This time it has been in punjab where a 25 year old girl was killed by her own family with swords. Her crime?. She married with a man against wishes of her family.
She seems to be trapped by her family who might have wooed her to come to their house along with her husband and her mother in law.
While lady got killed by sword , her mother in law too was killed while her husband sustained injury from bullet fired at him.
The cases of honor killing are on rise in India . Khap panchayat’s stand in favor of honor killing has been well published and support declared by m.p. jindal to khap panchayat has been debated since couple of days.
Honor Killing is worst case of killing because those who kill and those who get killed share relationship of blood. The people whom they trust the most kill them in name of honor.
The root problem behind honor killing is quest of young India to choose their own partners and age old tradition which is bounded by customs , traditions and social norms who want to protect age old system.
Ironically the young couple are accessing their right reserved not only by constitution but by true uncorrupted Indian culture which got corrupted in middle ages and those who call themselves as custodian of sanskruti are infact trying to protect corrupted system!!!!!!!!!
The most common type of honor killing seen is on inter caste based marriage and marriage done in same gotra.
How important in caste specially in small towns and rural India doesnot needs to be mentioned. I would like to share a small story regarding this.
I did my college in a city of north India. In my four years of stay in that city 90% of people whom I was introduced to would be agree to know my surname. Once I would let them know about my surname , immediately they would reply-’Acha aap brahmin hain’.
In my 25 years stay in my native mega city , I haven’t come across many people who were interested in knowing my caste.
Still I found intercaste marriage being as rare as 1 in 50 even in this mega city!!!!!!!
Now Let us come to gotra . First let us understand what is gotra.
Gotra is lineage. For example there are mainly eight gotras for brahmin which are as follows :
- Vishvâmitra
- Jamadagni
- Bharadvâja
- Gautama
- Atri
- Vasishtha
- Kashyapa
- Agasthya
Originally there were 7 gotras but later 8th one was added. Now a girl and boy belonging to different families but from same gotra are considered to be descendant from same ancestor. So according to vedic system , they become brother and sisters . Marriage is therefore prohibited since it is considered to be equivalent of incest and anomalies in the progeny.
Now those who believe in vedic system have every right to believe in what they think is right. None can object to that but killing a fellow human being for sake of one’s believe is crime and violation of basis human rights.
Indian Law doesnot prohibit marriages between same gotra and even if it does in future , no one has any right to kill other person.
