New sports bill would be soon taken up by cabinet. The bill has been doing rounds in media since few months. In outlook article on ravi shashtri and sunil gavaskar who are on pay roll of bcci and also commentator , sports minister of India too was interviewed.
In his interview sports minister of India , Mr Ajay Maken had mentioned the new sports bill which would bring all sports association under public scrutiny.
It would have RTI applicable to it . This itself would be one big big step considering how closed boards are to public scrutiny.
Another important step would be age limit for board officials which would be fixed to 70 years…Along with age limit there is proposed term limit too. The proposed term limit would be on 3 terms only as board chiefs. VK Malhotra and Jagdish Tytler have served multiple terms in there respective associations.
The most important clause as far as sports itself is concerned would be minimum 25 percent seats to be reserved for ex players of the sports.
If this happens we would have more of dhanraj pillais, kiran mores , kapil devs, pt ushas in the board which would be much better than having sharad pawars, kalmadis, ratnakar shettys , malhotras in the board.
A sports person who has played sports at highest level understands the pressure, needs of player more than person who runs business or is in politics. Sports person can come up with more ideas about performance on field than business/politics people who can have more ideas on how to generate money!!!!!!!!
Bill also proposed dope test as compulsory. ICC too conducts dope test but it is random dope test and not done on each and every people.
It would be interesting to see when the sports bill comes into parliament. We have many politicians across the party lines who are also board members while some being board chiefs.
Would they be interested in giving up their post. In we take example of BCCI we have narendra modi as gujarat cricket board chief, we have sharad pawar as mumbai cricket board chief, we have arun jaitley , shukla in the board , we have had lalu yadav as president of bihar cricket association!!!!!!!!
Interestingly ICC too has let all the boards know that they should do away with politicians as their chiefs!!!!.
Would this bill with all above clauses get passed in the parliament or would be see big grand unity between government and opposition like we see in electoral reforms or corruption movements?.
Only time can say , first let sports bill get cabinet nod , only then it can come into parliament. If this bill gets through it would really be transformation for sports and as country we have often neglected sports and haven’t had right context for that.
Sports is unifier , sports develops team spirit , sports teaches how to loose gracefully , sports teaches how to get trained , work hard and give your best.
It is high time that sports in India is run by people who have played sports. Isn’t it?
P.S. – With many cabinet ministers being in some board or other , the bill has been rejected in present form. Sports ministry would have to rework it.
