Songs have been integral part of India since time immeroial. We have songs for every reason and every season. Whether it is individual falling in love , whether it is prayer to god , whether it is lambi judai of love birds , whether it is season of harvesting , whether there is famine or whether there is drought. We have had our emotions comes out from our throat in form of songs.
Among hundreds of different category one category is patriotic songs. Songs which feels us with pride , committement and reignites emotions which are unparalled towards nation. Here is list of few of the songs which are my favorites.
1) Vandemataram :
The role and impact of vandemataram by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay has been phenomenal. National song of India , vandemataram is not just a song it has been integral part of India’s independence movement. Chanted by lakhs of Indians , hundreds of them gave life singing this song during movement for freedom. This song can ignite the national spirit even today and it connects generations.
2) Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logo:
Tribute to Indian soldiers , it is said that this song had made nehru cry when he first heard it. Sung by lata mangeshkar this song is very very relevant in today’s time. Who are soldiers?. Those protecting borders are obviously soldiers but also those who fought for our freedom struggle. Commoners who had nothing but dream and belief about India where people would get their own government . Today as we have corruption at highest level , this song does make me wonder , was all the struggle , sacrifice really the worth?. If not , how can we make it worth and give real tribute to our ancestors who sacrificed their career , their lives for sake of our future.
3) Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyaara Hai:
One of my favorite songs from movie roja. Specially the jaggo stanza. Today we are second fastest moving economy but immensly corrupt. Today we are more confident but at same time gap between rich and poor is increasing. Today we have gone to moon but still struggle to make every citizen hunger free. ‘Jaago’ applies to confident India more because today we can do something about our problems which previously we could not.
4) Har Karam Apna Karenge :
This is song from karma movie. It has two version ae vatan and ae sanam. In today’s India where we are more confident about our security (inspite of terror attacks), we are more in trouble because of system than external factors.
5) Mile Sur Mera Tumhaara:
Wonderful song and quite true for diverse country like ours. The lyrics are very deep and impactful.
6) Maa Tujhe Salaam:
A R Rahman’s maa tujhe salaam is wonderful song , well sung with all the passion in it.
7) Rang De Basanti Chola :
One of songs jo rongte khaade kar de. Popularly associate with one of biggest icon of subcontinent ever (bhagat singh) , the song ignites emotions which are difficult to pen down.
8) Hum Laaye Hain Tufaan Se Kasti Nikaal Ke :
Song which must be heard by every India. The lyrics connects us to era where nation stood first and everything personal became irrelevant . Where reasons died in front of what is possible. Where goal was single and it was freedom of India.
9) Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada :
Song from purab aur pachim , this song revisits our values and what we stood for. Nice song which makes us revisit our past .
10) Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani:
Tribute to Indians in general , this song cannot totally fall in category of patriotic song but it very nicely puts into perceptive of how we are.
11) Hoto Pe Sachai Raheti Hai:
Well when we have rajas, kalmadis, yeddurappas, khodas, rajus in powerful poisition , I wonder how this song can be sung in today’s India but this song ,never the less gives us ideal which we can seek and work for.
12) Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaaye :
This song from sarfarosh is more relevant in this era of corruption than was ever before. Lyrics are alraming and one may dismiss it but as termite called corruption is eating this nation , well it is better to speak out and take a stand than keep wondering!!!!!!!
I would keep adding in the list. I would also like to take this opportunity in wishing all Indians in India and across the globe a very happy independence day. We got freedom from brits but we need to keep working in establishing people’s democracy rather than high command’s democracy which prevails right now across party lines.
Happy Independence Day
