Comparing Three Different Eras Of Cricket Is Unfair

Sachin tendulkar did what seemed to be impossible in one day cricket. He scored 200 runs in single innings of one day. This man has done it all and his records speak for himself.

  • Highest number of centuries in onedays and test matches
  • Highest number of runs in onedays and test matches
  • Highest Run in single innings of onedays
  • Highest number of fours in onedays

Above are few of record of this run making machine since 20 years.  His latest achievement was hailed by fans , critics and ex players. All were delighted and all saluted this little master of the game.

While ex england captain naseer went on to declare sachin tendulkar to be greatest ever ,harbhajan too had same views.

Sobers when asked about his opinion of best batsman ever , he believed it to be sunil gavaskar. Reason he cited was the kind of bowling attack of that era , the rules giving bowlers right to bowl even 6 bounchers and 6 bumpers in a over, the lack of protective equipments , support staff .

But is it fair to compare tendulkar with gavaskar or bradman?. Is it possible to make comparisons?. How can we compare three eras?. All three had different set of challenge and different set of adaption needs. Bradman played just 52 matches in 20 years . His average shows his consistency . During bradman’s era bodyline was introduced by england. Now how sachin or gavaskar would have played bodyline ?. May be they would have adapted better or may be they would have failed miserably. How can one predict without actual situation?

Gavaskar recently was asked about if given option which era he would have choosen to play. The current one or era in which he played. Instantly he replied the era in which he played. When asked why ?. He said because there were terrific bowlers at that time. Yes gavaskar played in era which had some great bowlers who bowled with sheer pace. The rules of game was also not batsman biased like they are today.

Coming to sachin tendulkar , unlike bradman’s era and gavaskar’s era , sachin was born in era in which speed became name of game. Bradman always played fast and he even scored 300 runs in single day of test match. But gavaskar was known to be slow batsman and is infamous of scoring 36 runs of 174 balls!!!!!!!!!!!. But suppose gavaskar was born in today’s era, it is possible that he might have adapted accordingly.

Every era had different challenge and different demands , needs . Comparing three different eras is being unfair. Only players from same era can be compared. Because they face similar type of situations , challenges , demands , needs . They have similar type of pitches , similar type of rules and equipments , coaches .
