It is biggest sports event of the year. Common wealth games 2010 is also biggest sports event that India has ever organized and last big sports event was way back in 80s when India had organized asian games.54 countries participate in common wealth games which is held every four years. Common wealth is basically group of countries which was ruled by britian and common wealth games was started in 1930 with name of british empire games.
Being third largest sports event after olympics and asian games , common wealth games is important event and entire country was excited when delhi bid was accepted to host common wealth games-2010.
Now if china can organize biggest sporting event ,southafrica can organize soccer worldcup, why can’t India organize third biggest event?. After all we too are rising country , isn’t it?. With this feel not only we successfully bidded for the games , we also linked nation’s pride with the games. Now ofcourse no Indian would be proud of being colonized by britishers who then designed event which is now known as common wealth , but yes every India would want to be associated with country’s ability to organize such a huge sporting event .
So few of us were excited , majority were indifferent or unaware while sports minister was dejected. He was not in favor of Common wealth games . But manishankar iyer had few takers for his argument. Manishankar is no more sports minister and his party colleague , Mr gill holds the post .
Manishankar’s argument has logic. The kind of investment which we have seen in common wealth games is huge. According to financial times , though official estimates are $ 2.2 billion , total investment might end up being three times of that.
According to many , including mani shankar iyer , the same amount could have been invested in creating sports infrastructure ,all across India which would have assisted in development of sports culture in India. In all these sixty + years , India has not given too much thought on inducing sporting culture among its citizen. Sports is not just mere recreation activity , it helps in building up character. Team spirit , ability to bounce back , losing gracefully , appreciating rival , enhancing skills , adapting to condition and scenarios , there is lot which comes with sports and having sports culture can really make India , what it always dreamt to be.
Coming back to manishankar’s comments of last week which created sort of controversy. Mani in an interview said that he is glad that it is raining and would be happy if common wealth games fail!!!!!!!!!. He also claimed that other nations were bribed to let India win the bid!!!!Defending his comments , later he clarified his stand that he wanted common wealth games not to succeed so that we dont bid for Asian games and Olympics games. Instead he wants money to be invested in sports infrastructure.
This is not first time mani spoke against games and already under pressure of not meeting deadlines for pre requisite infrastructure for games , common wealth committee tried to defend itself ,slamming mani shankar iyer. Before mani’s comment could settle down , CNN-IBN dropped the bomb of massive corruption in tenders of cwg.
Citing cvc report , cnn-ibn showed ,how rates were inflated and how cost was increased.It later reported that cvc has ordered CBI to conduct probe for the matter.
To be honest , cvc report is not surprising for all of us. Corruption is something which has long been accepted as way of life by most of us. Isn’t it?. As name of games goes , cwg organizing committee might have mistaken common wealth games , as means of making wealth from common source, that is people of India!!!!!!!!!. Let’s make common wealth , might have been their sutra.
As time is ticking and only two months are left ,PMO has stepped in since failure to have successful game would directly effect India’s tall claims for being at par with other nations in terms of ability to organize, events of such stature.
As Indian , it does not make sense to me of investing such a huge money on event like this. I back iyer’s idea of investing such huge event on creating sports infrastructure ,all across the country . Having said that since already we have invested such huge money , taken responsibility of the game ,we have to see the game succeeds.
