Supreme court of India today announced an important verdict. The verdict which was particular for Aruna Shanbaug case but on larger perceptive it was on emotional debate of mercy killing.
Supreme court rejected mercy killing plea filed by pinik virani on behalf of aruna shanbaug but allowed “passive euthanasia” of withdrawing life support to patients in permanently vegetative state (PVS). Though it reject outright active euthanasia.
Mercy killing or euthanasia is an issue which divides opinions. Majority dont buy the argument of right to die . The opposers of euthanasia have very simple argument. How can any one have right to take away other’s life?. How can any doctor or court or government declare that person can die because he/she is in state of physical/mental ability which wont allow them to live life of self sustainability and dignity?. Are we god to know the future?. What if in future some miracle happens and recovery occurs?.
Their point is supported by miraculous recoveries which have had happened time and again ,across various part of the world. Six months back , recovery of a man from coma after 23 years had made headlines all across the globe. But such cases are very rare and if one person recovers , we have hundreds who dont, which is sad part of it.
Coming to aruna shanbaug , a nurse which has been living in hell since 37 years ,life has stopped since one brutal day. The day when she was attacked by ward boy and sexually assaulted. He choked her with a dog chain and sodomized her. The asphyxiation cut off oxygen supply to her brain resulting in brain stem contusion injury and cervical cord injury apart from leaving her cortically blind.Since the assault, she has been in a vegetative state. Tragic story.
Aruna technically continues to live but she is far from alive. She merely does exist. 37 long years have passed. I can just imagine what she would have gone through. I am not aruna shanbaug and so it is easy for me to comment based on what I think is right or wrong. I may say that she should continue to live or I may say well she should be allowed to die but all my statements would be based on what I think and can imagine her condition to be. Jis pe beet ti hai usko hi pata chalta hai , goes the saying.
The Supreme Court said there is a need to make a law on euthanasia and till the law is not made the Supreme Court’s verdict stands.
Some issues simply dont reach consensus , mercy killing is one such issue but we need larger debate on this. I feel sorry for aruna and what happened to her. I applaud pinki virani for taking up this case to supreme court and I applaud supreme court to come up with such a judgment.
